Private Scuba Instruction

One-on-one support that meets you where you are—and gets you where you want to go.

Some divers thrive in a group class. Others learn best with a quieter pace, more repetition, and an instructor focused entirely on them. If you’re looking for extra patience, extra planning, and a conservative, safety-first approach in Monterey’s unique conditions, our Private Scuba Instruction is built for you.

At Monterey Blue Dive Academy, we use private instruction to remove the friction that can come with “one-size-fits-all” training. We tailor the day to your goals, your comfort level, and your experience—whether you want to build confidence, sharpen skills, or simply enjoy a calmer learning environment with clear feedback.

Who private instruction is for

Private instruction isn’t only for “nervous” divers—though it can be a game-changer if anxiety, stress, or past challenges have gotten in your way. It’s for anyone who wants focused attention and a plan designed around them.

You’ll likely love private instruction if you:

  • Want a patient instructor who can slow down, repeat, and reframe skills until they click
  • Prefer learning without the pressure of keeping up with a group pace
  • Are coming back after time away and want to rebuild comfort deliberately
  • Learn best with immediate, personalized feedback and coaching in the moment
  • Want help troubleshooting specific issues (buoyancy, breathing, trim, finning, descents/ascents, navigation, comfort in kelp, etc.)
  • Have a tight schedule and want training time used efficiently
  • Are planning Monterey dives and want a thoughtful, conservative progression

Not sure if you “qualify” for private instruction? If you have a goal, a concern, or even a vague sense of “I want this to feel easier,” that’s enough to start a conversation.

How private instruction differs from standard training or coaching

The big difference is attention and pacing. In a standard class environment, time is shared—briefings, demonstrations, practice reps, and feedback must be balanced across the group. In private instruction, everything centers on you.

That means:

We teach at your speed. If you need extra time to settle your breathing before descending, we’ll take it. If you’re nailing skills quickly, we’ll build complexity thoughtfully rather than repeating what you’ve already mastered.

We focus on what matters most. Instead of following a generic flow, we emphasize the skills and situations that will make the biggest difference for your comfort and safety.

We plan your dives with intention. Private instruction gives us room to be picky—in a good way—about conditions, sequencing, and building skills progressively so you feel in control, not rushed.

You get more real feedback. Small adjustments—weighting, posture, timing, and task loading—often make the biggest impact. Private instruction lets us observe closely and coach precisely.

If you’re wondering about the difference between private instruction and coaching: coaching is often about refinement and performance; instruction can also include foundational learning, rebuilding habits, and creating a step-by-step pathway. If you tell us what you want, we’ll recommend the best format.

Our approach: patient, prepared, and conservative

Monterey is incredible, and it can also be demanding—temperature, visibility, surge, kelp, and changing conditions can all add layers to a dive. We don’t fight that reality; we plan for it.

Patient instruction. We don’t measure progress by speed. We measure it by calm, repeatable skills and good decision-making. We’ll help you understand the “why,” not just the “how,” so you can self-correct and keep improving after the session.

Preparation and planning. Before we ever get in the water, we’ll talk through your experience, goals, comfort level, and any sticking points. Then we’ll map out a session that makes sense—what we’ll do first, what comes next, and what success looks like.

Safety and a conservative approach. We prioritize comfort, control, and margins. That includes realistic expectations, clear communication, and a pace that keeps you relaxed enough to learn well. If conditions don’t support the plan, we’ll adapt the plan—not push the diver.

What we can work on in a private session

Private instruction can be broad or ultra-specific. Some divers want a full reset; others want to solve one persistent problem. Either way, we’ll build a session around practical outcomes.

Common goals include:

  • Getting your weighting dialed in so buoyancy feels effortless
  • Improving trim and reducing kicking/fatigue
  • Making descents, ascents, and stops calmer and more controlled
  • Building comfort in Monterey conditions (kelp, surge, lower visibility)
  • Strengthening communication, situational awareness, and dive planning habits
  • Refreshing core skills after time away so you can enjoy diving again

If you have something particular in mind, tell us—even if it feels hard to describe. “I feel awkward underwater” is a perfectly good starting point.

What to expect when you reach out

We’ll start with a simple conversation: where you’re at, what you want, and what’s been getting in the way. From there, we’ll suggest a plan that matches your priorities and keeps things realistic.

You don’t need to show up “ready” or “in shape” or “confident.” You just need to show up willing to learn. We’ll handle the structure, the pacing, and the coaching—so you can focus on becoming the diver you want to be.
